Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik

Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik is Associate Professor and current Head of the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana (2016-). She is the initiator, co-founder and first president of the European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology (EAAA), and is ASET Stiftung Senior Research Scholar and Member of ASET Advisory Board on Chinese Art, Archaeology and Architecture (Berlin, Germany). She is also the leader of two research projects: East Asian Collections in Slovenia: Inclusion of Slovenia in the Global Exchange of Objects and Ideas with East Asia (2018-2021) and bilateral project between Slovenia and US Collecting practices of East Asian objects in the centres and peripheries: on the example of Slovenia and USA  (2018-2020). She is also member of the editorial board of the journal Asian Studies (published by Department of Asian Studies), newly established journal by EACS European Journal of Chinese Studies and new book series entitled European Studies in Asian Art and Archaeology (published by EAAA and Brill). Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik was also board member of the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS) (2012-2018).

Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik studied History, Art history and Sinology at the University of Ljubljana and obtained her PhD in 2006 at the same university. In her Ph. D. thesis, she focused on Han tombs with murals. During her studies she had already been trained in various universities in Taiwan and China for several years (Chengdu University, Sichuan Normal University, National Taiwan Normal University, Wuhan University). After PhD, she was visiting researcher at the Centre for Chinese Studies in Taipei (2009), Wuhan University (2010) and National Palace Museum in Taipei (2013/14; J.S. Lee Memorial Fellow). Her research fields include Chinese traditional and modern art, traditional Chinese cosmology and its reflection in art, Chinese Buddhist art, material culture, and collecting history. She regularly publishes the research results in both Slovenian and international academic journals. She is the author of the monograph In the World of Immortal Creatures: Grave Art of Han Dynasty and its Comological Design (2017), several chapters in monographs and a series of scientific papers. She has also received Grand Prize of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, for achievements in the fields of research and education in 2016.
