Civil society in South Korea is considered one of the most resilient in Asia, while civil society movements have had a significant impact on the social, cultural and political change in contemporary South Korean society. This course is focused on the emergence and development of South Korean civil society since the 1980s. It will introduce basic theoretical concepts that will help students understand the characteristics of South Korean civil society, its relationship with the state, and the role of civil society movements in contemporary South Korea. Students will also learn about practical cases of South Korean civil society organisations and urban social movements. Lectures will be complemented by seminar assignments and screenings of Korean films, which will be followed by discussions on relevant topics.
