Prof. Dr. Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik

Nataša VAMPELJ SUHADOLNIK is a Professor at the Department of Asian Studiesa, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. She is also the initiator, co-founder, and first president of the European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology (EAAA), as well as a Senior Research Scholar and Member of ASET Advisory Board for Chinese Art, Archaeology, and Architecture (Berlin, Germany). Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik currently leads the national project Orphaned Objects: Examining East Asian Objects outside Organised Collecting Practices in Slovenia (2021–2024) and bilateral project entitled Collecting practices in the peripheries: East Asian textiles in Slovenian museums and in the Birmingham Museum of Art in the USA (2022–2024). She also led the national project East Asian collections in Slovenia: inclusion of Slovenia in the global exchange of objects and ideas with East Asia (2018–2022), within which the project team created a website and database of East Asian objects in Slovenian museums. The project team was awarded the Prometheus of Science for Excellence in Communication for 2020 by Slovene Science Foundation. She also led the project team at the Faculty of Arts within the international project PAGODE - Europeana China (2020–2021), which aimed to digitise and present Chinese heritage in the European digital library Europeana.

Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik is also a member of the editorial board of the journal Asian Studies (published by the Department of Asian Studies) and the two new book series: European Studies in Asian Art and Archaeology (published by EAAA and Brill) and East Asian collections in Slovenia (published by FF UL). She was also a member of the editorial board of the newly established EACS journal European Journal of Chinese Studies (2016–2021). She is also a board member of the East Asia Resource Library (EARL) at the University of Ljubljana and served as Head of the Department of Asian Studies from 2016–2020.

Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik studied history, art history and sinology at the Faculty of Arts University of Ljubljana. In 2006, she received her PhD from the same university. Already during her studies, she continued her education for several years at various universities in Taiwan and PR of China. She completed the first year of her doctoral studies at the Chengdu University and Sichuan Pedagogical University. After her PhD, she worked as a visiting scholar at the Center for Chinese Studies in Taipei (2009), Wuhan University (2010) and the National Palace Museum in Taipei (2013/14). Her research areas include East Asian material culture and collecting history, East Asian cultural heritage in Slovenia, traditional and modern Chinese art, Chinese funerary art, and Chinese Buddhist art. She regularly publishes research results in both Slovenian and international scientific journals. She is the author of the monograph In the world of immortal creatures: Han funerary art and its cosmological design (2017, in Slovenian language), several chapters in monographic publications, and a number of scientific articles. She was also awarded the Grand Prize of the Faculty of Arts University of Ljubljana for her scientific research work and pedagogical achievements.
