Bushidō in Transformation: Japanese Warrior Culture and Martiality

This international Symposium brings new perspectives on the role and relevance of the traditional Japanese ideology of bushidō or the “way of the warrior” in the modern world. The concept of bushidō, usually defined as the moral and behavioural code of the samurai and as the cornerstone of Japanese culture, will be critically presented and thoroughly examined by renowned Slovenian and foreign symposium participants from the fields of Japanese history, religion, sociology, anthropology. They will unveil views on the ideology of bushidō, the warriors’ way of life, Neo-Confucian and religious tradition in bushidō, the transformation of bushidō through the centuries, and from Japan to the world, the invention of tradition, the popularity of bushidō and martial arts in the world and in Slovenia, the impact of bushidō on different segments of contemporary Japanese society, etc.
